Antique Sitzendorf Germany Pierrot porcelain art deco harlequin vanity dish

  

Antique Harlequin Figural Powder Puff Dish in the shape of a reclining Pierrot. Poor Pierrot, whose origins are from the late seventeenth-century Italian troupe of players performing in Paris known as the Comédie-Italienne, he is everyone's favorite sad clown, so in love with Columbine who breaks his heart by falling for Harlequin.

The dishes were advertised in the Sitzendorf catalog as boudoir puff dishes for a flapper era lady's vanity, early 1900's. Art Deco Pierrot has an expressive face with beautifully hand painted features, showing real expression. Marked with the maker's hallmark, it is incised with 24406 on the bottom, his black detailing, face and cap are handpainted. Measures 4-3/4" x 31/4" x 2-1/2.
